Georgia women’s legal group divided over same-sex marriage
Several members of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers have resigned and many more signed a letter expressing disappointment after the organization did not take a stand on marriage equality for same-sex couples.
On April 10, four former presidents of GAWL and the current president of the Atlanta Bar Association, as well as 51 other members, signed a letter from its Public Affairs Committee & Feminist Affinity Group to the bar association’s leadership stating their dissatisfaction that the bar association chose not to join in an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court against California’s Prop. 8, which ended same-sex marriage in the state.

The Atlanta Pride Committee is again under fire for its Georgia Aquarium official kick-off event over concerns for the health of the marine animals there.
Tim Gunn, known for his role on TV’s “Project Runway,” has written a letter to Atlanta Pride Committee Executive Director Buck Cooke, urging Cooke and the Atlanta Pride Committee to change venues for the Oct. 11 Atlanta Pride Kick-off Party.

“I’ve lived in the area for 21 years and I understand what the complaints are about from the neighborhoods,” Hammill said. “But I personally feel what’s going on is unfair. It’s like they are prosecuting people who really aren’t doing anything wrong.”
Activists: Ga. HIV criminalization law promotes stigma
Georgia’s HIV criminalization laws are heavy-handed and unnecessary, according to activists who addressed a crowd of about 100 at the Phillip Rush Center on Tuesday evening.
Many states, including Georgia, have made it a felony for HIV-positive people to have sex with someone who is HIV-negative without disclosing their status, even if protection, like condoms, is used and even if the disease is not transmitted.
