New HIV/AIDS support group launches in south metro Atlanta

A new HIV/AIDS support group called Community C.A.R.E. (Community AIDS/HIV Response and Education) has launched in Stockbridge to bring more support options to those living south of Atlanta. They will begin meeting Tuesday, January 21 and every third Tuesday of the month thereafter at Community Bible Church.

Community C.A.R.E. was started by Mysti Outler and her husband, Eric. It’s a personal issue for both as Mysti was diagnosed as HIV positive in 2003 and she has found few resources south of Atlanta.

“There’s a lot going on in Fulton County, in Atlanta, but nothing this way,” she tells GA Voice. “Being HIV positive, I know about the shame and the stigma, so I know it is really important to be able to have that support.”

The project will start with just the monthly support group, but the Outlers have plans to expand the resources available to those living with HIV.

“We want to extend the Community C.A.R.E. group to education, HIV testing, promoting prevention and going out in the community to care for people who are infected, like providing rides to the doctor’s office,” she says.

Contact Community C.A.R.E. at 678-827-2090 or communitycare@groupmail.com for the room number (not included for confidentiality reasons) or if you would like to volunteer.
