In a move to raise money from investors, OnlyFans will block “sexually explicit” content starting in October, according to Bloomberg.
OnlyFans has been a popular site for LGBTQ sex workers to distribute NSFW video and photo content to paying subscribers over the past year. The site has attracted more than 130 million users.
Now, the company says users will still be able to post nude content so long as it’s consistent with OnlyFans’ new policies, which have not yet been released.
“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” the company said.
Because OnlyFans is responsible for billing and distributing payments to users, the move away from NSFW content is in response to pressure from banking partners and payment providers. Sex work is still prohibited by federal law.
OnlyFans follows Tumblr in the move to ban sexual content from the site. Following the ban on the popular social media site, Tumblr’s traffic declined by almost 30 percent in three months. After a year, its value plummeted from over $1.1 billion to $3 million, according to Business Insider.
