The Starlight Cabaret has long been a staple of Atlanta Pride and the perfect send off to an event-filled weekend. This is the 15th anniversary of the cabaret, so organizers are making it extra special.
Not only is it always entertaining, but it’s a way to show support for and acknowledge the drag community, says JP Sheffield, executive director of Atlanta Pride.
“The drag community was so instrumental during Stonewall,” says Sheffield.
Over the years, the cabaret has morphed from a handful of performers on stage to many, sometimes performing together. This year’s version not only includes a slate of drag queens but drag kings as well.
According to Sheffield, the event has grown over the years to become one of the biggest such events in the Southeast, possibly the country. Among the 20 acts this year are the Armorettes, Gigi Monroe, Nicole Paige Brooks and the Athens Boys Choir.
Another of the 2010 performers will be queer burlesque performer Vagina Jenkins. This is the first time a burlesque act has been part of the cabaret.
The Starlight Cabaret is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday night at the Coca-Cola Stage.
