Gay speakers planned for MLK march, rally on Jan. 17

Each year at the Martin Luther King Jr. March and Rally, LGBT representatives are asked to speak.

This year, Tracy Elliott, executive director of AID Atlanta; and Anneliese Singh, founder of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition and assistant professor at UGA, will address the crowd at the rally.

The march and rally will be on Jan. 17, MLK's birthday and takes place after the annual Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde breakfast at Saint Mark United Methodist Church.

Created by Atlanta activists Darlene Hudson and Craig Washington, the breakfast honors Rustin, an influential gay adviser to King, and Lorde, the celebrated lesbian and feminist poet.

The sky’s the limit: AID Atlanta receives $745,000 donation from Delta

AID Atlanta will receive almost $750,000 thanks to a fundraiser by Delta Air Lines. The Atlanta-based Delta hosted a 15-day fundraising campaign that launched on Dec. 1 encouraging SkyMiles members to donate a minimum of $250 prior to Dec. 15. In return, the members would receive a certain number of Medallion Qualification Miles depending on their donation amount.

The $745,000 in donations for AID Atlanta makes Delta the largest corporate fundraising partner for the HIV agency. This also marks the first time AID Atlanta has joined in Delta’s MQM promotion and the success came just in time.

“Delta Air Lines’ generosity comes at a critical time,” said Mark B. Rinder, chairman of the Board of AID Atlanta, in a press release. “Demand for our services continues to grow while corporate and foundation grant-giving has dropped significantly. Over the past two years, we have found it difficult to keep pace with the demand. We still need support from others and are thankful for Delta Air Lines’ leadership.” Delta Air Lines has many years of support of AID Atlanta’s goal to help minimize HIV infections and maximize the excellence of life of those already infected.

Joining Hearts accepting toys for donations

When you hear the words Joining Hearts, the image most likely to pop up in your head is hundreds of people in bathing suits, standing around the Piedmont Park pool enjoying cocktails, as booming beats thunder in the background — all to raise thousands of dollars for AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House.

But Joining Hearts also holds events throughout the year to raise funds for these organizations, as well as its annual Wish List holiday party where guests bring toys for the children at Jerusalem House and gift cards for youths who are part of the teen program at AID Atlanta.

A wish list for the Wish List party is set up at Target stores and available online, said Patrick McCulley, board member of Joining Hearts.

The holiday season is upon us, and it means that we are swirling in the hustle and bustle of all of that seasonal chaos.  Many people don’t like this time of year, but I love it.  I love everything about the holiday season – the twinkling lights, the merry music, the gift giving!  People seem to just be in a better mood this time of year, and we all seem focused on making humanity a little bit better.

No matter how you celebrate this time of year, music often plays a big part in these celebrations.  I started listening to my holiday CD’s just before Thanksgiving, and now there are radio stations that are playing seasonal favorites 24 hours a day!  The music conjures up all kinds of memories for me – people, places, and feelings of times gone by.  In addition, these songs often serve as images of not the world we know, but the world we’d like to know.  While we may not have snow covered hills or frolicking magical snow men here in Georgia, who doesn’t mind being transported to a better place and time?

M.I.S.T.E.R. makes a Positive Impact

“Anything a gay man wants to find in Atlanta, he can find at MISTER” is the motto for Positive Impact’s M.I.S.T.E.R. program, a branch of the nonprofit AIDS service organization dedicated to providing culturally competent mental health and prevention services for people affected by HIV.

M.I.S.T.E.R. stands for Men’s Information Services: Testing * Empowerment * Resources.

Through state, federal and foundation grants, the M.I.S.T.E.R. program is able to offer free rapid HIV testing for walk-ins on Mondays through Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. as well as Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Atlanta has been a whirlwind of activity in the past few weeks, and the coming months promise to offer us no let up.  Here at AID Atlanta, we finished October with both PRIDE events and the 20th Annual AIDS Walk & 5K Run.  These events are two of our agency’s biggest outreach initiatives, and they require the services of our entire staff.

In addition to our staff, these events would not be able to happen without our wonderful family of volunteers and members. Each year, these events leave me on a high; I come off of these events reinvigorated for the work we do, and thankful for the opportunities we have to serve Atlanta.  In addition, I am always amazed at the huge turnouts for these events.  PRIDE is one of the largest in the nation, and our AIDS Walk fills Piedmont Park and the streets of downtown Atlanta with the support of the community.

A woman standing behind him said she knew that panel of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and walked with her son and the two men toward it.

And there the two men, a woman and her teen son and the mother of Scott James Webster, the young man memorialized on the panel, gathered for a few minutes to talk during the 2010 AIDS Walk Atlanta held Oct. 17.

The panel includes Webster’s photo, a pair of cowboy boots and the lyrics to some of his favorite country music songs.”
