MondoHomo will not return Memorial Day weekend

MondoHomo, Atlanta's Memorial Day Weekend queer arts festival, is canceled, according to event co-founder Kiki Carr. The decision came earlier this year when organizers felt it was time to move on.

"I think it will reinvent itself," Carr said today about the future of the festival.

"Basically the core group of folks that started it are tired and want to move on other projects," she continued. "We've been slowly coming to that conclusion for a while, but probably came to an agreement in the last two months."

Yesterday was National Marriage Equality Day, an effort launched by Atlanta-based Equally Wed magazine to encourage consumers to patronize businesses that support same-sex marriage rights.  The response, originally focused on Starbucks but then expanded, is intended to counter Chick-fil-A and its anti-gay leadership in the wake of CEO Dan Cathy's recent interview where he stated his chicken chain was “guilty as charged” when it came to opposing marriage equality.

The event has garnered national media attention and almost 35,000 checked on Facebook that they planned to participate.

Equally Wed is also sponsoring a photo contest for the best pictures of those participating in National Marriage Equality Day.

MondoHomo returns Memorial Day weekend

MondoHomo, Atlanta’s alternative queer arts festival, returns Memorial Day weekend to rock your face off with music, art and queer consciousness. But perhaps you’ve been too intimidated to attend in the past or are not sure what to expect. We interviewed organizer Jesse Morgan for a few tips and insights for those who want to experience MondoHomo but were too afraid to ask.

MondoHomo, the queer alterna-fest, returns to Atlanta this Memorial Day Weekend, but pre-festival events are already underway.

The third annual Wig Out event will be held at the Atlanta Eagle on Saturday, April 7, from 2 – 8 p.m. This year’s theme, “Queer Justice, Queer Beats!” will be a celebration of wigs, dancing and drag, according to event organizers.

“It’s a play on ‘no justice, no peace,’ the classic protest cry,” said MondoHomo co-founder Kiki Carr.

“MondoHomo is all about art and fun and politics. It sort of pulls that all together very well,” Carr continued.
