A number of LGBT bloggers expressed dismay Tuesday night that no question about same-sex marriage was posed during the first two presidential debates or in the only vice presidential debate.

But at a most unexpected moment during the Oct. 16 debate, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney stumbled into an awkward riff about the importance of two parents being married before having children.

That set off a flurry of reaction among various LGBT bloggers who were posting their reactions to the debate live on Twitter.

Obama cites ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in first debate

No questions concerning LGBT issues were posed during the first presidential debate Wednesday night, but President Obama made a direct reference to one.

Near the end of the 90-minute debate, responding to a charge from Republican challenger Mitt Romney that he has not worked well with Republicans, President Obama pointed to a number of examples where his administration worked with Republicans with success. One example he cited was repeal of the ban on gays in the military.

Immediate reaction from many commentators — mainstream and LGBT —held that Romney dominated the debate and that Obama failed to take some political shots he had at his disposal.

Democrats offer stark contrast on gay rights at convention

The Democratic National Convention is underway in Charlotte. Democrats from across the country have gathered to officially nominate President Barack Obama and to drum up support before the fall election season gets underway.

First Lady Michelle Obama stole the show during her closing speech last night. She talked about her husband, the couples' history and continuing his vision ahead of the November election. There were some laughs but mostly a touching account of the couple before, during and after the last presidential election.

We're just a handful of days away from the kickoff of the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., where attendees are expected to nominate former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney to represent the party in the upcoming fall presidential election.

Possible hurricanes aside, officials in Tampa are expecting more than 50,000 delegates, media and other convention visitors to descend on the city in the coming days, including representatives from gay conservative groups like Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud.

Gay groups will need to shake off an unwelcome feeling amid reports that this year's Republican Party platform remains as anti-gay as ever.

Romney VP pick Paul Ryan backed bans on gay marriage, adoption

Paul Ryan, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s chosen running mate, supports amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage and has voted to stop gay couples in Washington, D.C., from adopting children.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and presumptive Republican presidential nominee, announced Ryan as his vice presidential nominee Aug. 11. The sparked criticism from LGBT political groups concerned about Ryan’s record as a U.S. congressman from Wisconsin.

The Romney-Ryan ticket “could roll back much of the progress we’ve seen toward full equality,” the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBT political group, argued in a press release.

Former Massachusetts governor and presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney today announced that U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin would join him atop the Republican ticket to run against President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden this November.

Ryan represents Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District, a position he's held since 1999, and chairs the House Budget Committee.

No friend to the LGBT rights movement, Ryan has continuously scored at or about zero on the Human Rights Campaign congressional scorecard. Ryan voted for the proposed constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman and fought to ban same-sex adoptions in Washington, D.C.

Too far? Gay activist ‘glitter bombs’ Minnesota protesters

As Minnesota for Marriage protested outside of the General Mills headquarters in Minneapolis last week, a young gay activist and a few of his friends decided to counter the not-so-positive message with their own take on the “glitter bomb.”

The protest was organized after General Mills brand Oreo was featured in a rainbow-themed Pride advertisement. The ad, originally posted to the social networking site Facebook, created an instant firestorm among anti-gay groups and prompted a call for protest.

“We’ve heard from hundreds of people who are extremely disappointed with General Mills’ opposition to the marriage amendment,” said Minnesota for Marriage Deputy Campaign Manager Andy Parrish when the group announced a planned protest of the company's headquarters.

Gay political group endorses Romney

GOProud, a national organization that advocates conservatism and gay inclusion in the Republican Party, announced today its endorsement of former Gov. Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

“President Obama and his friends on the left want this election to be about divisive social issues, because the President’s record on jobs and the economy is indefensible,” Jimmy LaSalvia, GOProud executive director, said in a statement released today.

LaSalvia echoed the sentiment of many gay conservative voters.
