At an LGBT fundraiser on April 23, state Rep. Simone Bell made a passionate plea to supporters for not only their money but their votes on May 20. Bell, the first openly gay African-American lesbian elected to a state legislature, faces opposition from Erica Long in the Democratic primary. Erica Long is the wife of Ralph Long, who Bell defeated two years ago to retain her seat in the state House.
There is plenty of work still to be done Bell said at the fundraiser, including fighting off anti-gay “freedom of religion” bills that were defeated with her help during this year’s session but are sure to come back in the next session.
Bell is endorsed by Georgia Equality and the Stonewall Democrats as well as the national Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.
