More than 200 attend annual Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde breakfast to honor MLK Day

The 10th annual Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde Breakfast brought more than 200 people to St. Mark United Methodist Church this morning, uniting a diverse group of young people and elders alike from Atlanta’s LGBT community to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Rustin, a gay mentor to MLK who organized the renowned 1963 March on Washington and brought Ghandi’s teachings of non-violence into the Civil Rights Movement, suffered greatly as an openly gay man in such homophobic times, including being fired from leadership positions. He died in 1987 at the age of 75.

Lorde, a lesbian author and poet, was also an activist who wrote “Zami: A New Spelling of My Name," which she described as not an autobiography, but a "biomythography." ZAMI, Atlanta’s own organization for black lesbians of African descent, takes its name from Lorde's book. Lorde battled cancer in her later years and died in 1992 at the age of 58.

Former "ex gay man" and ball queen Mother Cavalli, now Pastor Ja’Von Crockett, appeared on a religion show on Atlanta Live to discuss Crockett’s turnaround from dressing in drag to now preaching in the pulpit.

With Crockett on the show was Pastor Willis Graham, whom Crockett said was his best friend.

Mondo from ‘Project Runway’ opens up about HIV on upcoming CNN special

You all loved him on Lifetime's "Project Runway" last year and when he designed an amazing outfit to reveal to the world he is HIV positive, Mondo Guerra received accolades from gay fans for his honesty. He may not have won on the catwalk, but he won the hearts of many of the show's loyal viewers.

On Friday, Mondo, who is gay, will join other stars including Elton John, Sharon Stone and Mo'nique for an "Anderson Cooper 360" special, "Hope Survives: 30 Years of AIDS."

Atlanta gay radio show "Alternative Perspectives" tonight will feature guests speaking about the 10th annual Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde breakfast held during the MLK Weekend as well as organizers of the planned "Queerlicious Kiss In" for Gov. Nathan Deal's inauguration that was canceled on Monday due to snow.

Hosted by longtime activist Betty Couvertier, "Alternative Perspectives" is an LGBT radio show that airs each Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. on WRFG 89.3 FM.

Ann Coulter disses World Net Daily on Fox’s ‘Red Eye’

Conservative writer and talking-head Ann Coulter responded to being dropped from media outlet World Net Daily’s “Taking Back America Conference” in comments on Fox News this weekend.

Coulter, one of several high-profile conservatives who voiced some kind of support for LGBT issues or LGBT organizations in recent weeks, is scheduled to speak at Homocon, a conservative conference sponsored by GOProud, a national gay Republican group.

“I’m sorry, I did not prepare for this discussion. I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Coulter said initially.

There were cheers outside San Francisco City Hall at 12:24 Pacific time Thursday afternoon as news emerged that U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker had denied a request to delay enforcement of his ruling against Proposition 8. But those cheers were mitigated a few minutes later when details of the judge’s order were revealed: Walker continued to delay enforcement of his decision until August 18, giving the Yes on 8 supporters of the measure ample time to seek a stay from the 9th Circuit or even the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.
